This beautiful hike gives you a little bit of everything: Glacier, rocky mountains, amazing views from a bird’s eye perspective – and the guide will bring a happy husky on the tour as well!
Your guide will pick you up at the hotel, and drive to the starting point of the tour: Gruve 7 (Mine 7) – the only mine in the Longyearbyen area which is still active. The hike starts at about 400m above sea level, where the views are fantastic from the first second. From there we continue our tour across the base of Foxfonna glacier.
The Foxfonna glacier, named after the Arctic fox, is located approximately 15 kilometers south-east from Longyearbyen. It is approximately 6 kilometres long, and runs from Foxtoppen (955m) and Gilsonryggen (949m) in the south, and northwards over the mountain Breinosa into Adventdalen (the "Advent Valley").
We continue our hike towards Foxdalen (the "Fox Valley"). Here we will take a break at an old trapper's cabin: the perfect place for an expedition lunch. After a tasty warm meal and hot drinks, we will head down to Adventdalen, to finish at Camp Barentz. After the tour, you will get dropped off back at your hotel. The total distance of the hike is roughly 11 km.
This hike is around 11 km long, and is not suited for those who are not confident hikers. The terrain is uneven, and we will cross several streams. We recommend hiking boots, wind and waterproof clothing, extra clothes in a backpack, and a hat and mittens.
